local food

Last week, we picked strawberries at a local farm with some friends. Annabelle helped me pick berries while Elijah rode on my back in the Ergo. It was a lot of work, but also very fun.

After reading this post I was glad to learn that Picha Farms only sprays their plants 2 times a year and never the berries themselves. I ended up picking about 8lbs at $1.50/lb. and it was the perfect amount for strawberry shortcake, strawberry freezer jam and a few for eating. Next time, I would like to pick a few more pounds for freezing for smoothies.

Elise’s recipe for Strawberry Shortcake has been my favorite and I have made it several times over the last few years with rave reviews every time. I make the biscuits from scratch and it is worth the effort!

I had never made jam before, but was intrigued by Lindsay’s Raw Naturally Sweetened Berry Freezer Jam. I made it exactly as directed with Sucanat and Pamona’s Pectin as suggested and it turned out simply scrumptious.

There is just something about Strawberries that tastes like Summer 🙂
